FAQ
for Students
1. How do I get credit for a National
High School course?
There are 2 ways to receive credit for National High School
courses.
-
If you are already enrolled in a traditional school,
your school (who has already authorized you to take the
course) can grant credit for taking the course, using the
information that we provide on the end of semester grade
report.
-
You can also ask for an official transcript from NHS
to be sent to your school as transfer credit. Because NHS
is a SACS and CITA accredited school, there should be no
problem transferring your credits to any school within the
United States.
2. Can I enroll as an international student?
50% of the students enrolled at National High School reside in over
90 Countries. NHS is internationally and Regionally Accredited, therefore,
international students looking to enroll in an accredited U.S College
or University, must have a High School diploma from an accredited U.S.
High School.
3. What if I already completed my Secondary/High School Diploma from my native country?
International students who have already received a high school diploma
or its equivalent must successfully complete the following classes that
are specific to an American diploma, in order to obtain an American
High School diploma. This assumes that students have already completed
4 years each of Science, Mathematics, and their native language; as
well as World Geography and World History. A copy of their high school
transcript must also be on file with NHS.
American Government - (0.5 Carnegie Unit)
Economics - (0.5 Carnegie Unit)
Health - (0.5 Carnegie Unit)
English 11 (American Literature) - (1.0 Carnegie Unit)
English 12 (British Literature) - (1.0 Carnegie Unit)
American History - (1.0 Carnegie Unit)
Students who have completed Health and/or Economics as part of their
original high school diploma are exempted from those courses, but must
still complete a total of 4.0 Carnegie units from National High School
in order to earn a diploma. Additional credit can be made up by completing
an elective course of their choice.
4. How much time will the course take?
Each course is created with approximately 18 lessons during
each semester. This allows you an entire week to finish each
assignment and should only take an average student 5-6 hours
of time per week.
The time is spent doing textbook or online readings, completing
interactive activities, responding to a discussion topic,
and completing the assessment. Some students, who are disciplined
and self-motivated, have been able to complete each lesson
in just a couple of hours.
Once a lesson is completed, you may move on to the next lesson
and complete the course as fast as you’d like. If you
need more time for special circumstances, it is also possible
to receive an extension past the normal 18 weeks per semester.
5. What else do I need?
Students should also have the appropriate study environment,
technology, internet connection, and an email address in order
to successfully complete the course.
6. Do I need to order a textbook?
All core courses:
(English, Math, Science, Social Sciences, Foreign Languages
and Health)
have digital textbooks that are included in the enrollment
fee for your course. User names and passwords will be issued
to students as soon as the registration process is complete
so they can access the online material.
Advanced Placement courses and Career/Tech courses:
require a hard copy book, as they are usually not available
in digital format. Books can be ordered directly through the
publisher or through Amazon.com by using the information provided
in the syllabus.
7. Is there someone available to help me
with my homework?
National High School provides certificated, highly qualified
instructors for all courses, whose expertise is in their disciplinary
field. Instructors are available for consultation through
email, telephone, and in the virtual classroom. If you need
special one-on-one assistance, you can also make an appointment
with your instructor to meet in the virtual classroom at a
special time.
Independent study students will have access through email,
telephone, and special appointments with an independent study
teacher who is also an expert in their disciplinary area.
All instructors are available during normal business hours
throughout the week, but may not be available on the weekends
or on holidays.
8. What happens if I don’t finish the
course? Is there a refund?
There is always a 2-week add and drop period for each course
enrollment. If you decide to drop the course during that 2-week
period, you will not be billed for the course. However, if
you do not drop the course during that initial 2-week period,
you will be liable for the cost of the course and there is
no refund available.
9. Can I get college credit for an AP course?
National High School provides an AP Prep Exam at the end of
each AP course. However, students should arrange with their
own school to take the actual AP Exam in April of each year.
If you choose not to take the AP exam, you should also visit
your college's testing center to find out if you can "test
out" of a course that you have already completed during
high school.
Many colleges and universities give students the opportunity
to take competency tests or CLEP tests for AP and Honors courses
they completed during high school. In order to receive college
credit, the credit must be granted by the college, and cannot
be granted by National High School.
10. How do I take tests?
Exams and assessments for National High School courses are
all given online, via the Internet in a computerized format.
Most questions (true/false, fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice,
matching) are computer graded, although short answer and essay
questions need to be reviewed by the instructor before a complete
grade for the exam can be given. Students receive immediate
feedback from the computer about questions that are computer
graded.
Final grades for assessments and exams are completed and posted
within 48 hours in the student's online grade book, so that
students may move on to the next lesson.
11. Does National High School have any partnerships
with Online University for its graduates?
The National High School has partnered with the University
of Atlanta to offer its graduates 15% off the total tuition
entering into an undergraduate program online. For more information
on the University of Atlanta, visit www.uofa.edu.
