Getting ready for online learning at National Online High School

To succeed in an online program, it's helpful to have:
At National High School you have the flexibility to participate when and how you learn best (at 4 p.m., with a glass of orange juice, in a perfectly quiet house; or at 2 a.m., with some cold fried chicken or while listening to the radio. Ultimately, the choice is yours!). You can read material at your own pace to maximize your learning, plus you'll get individual attention from your online teachers. Most of all, you can expect a lot of personal support from NHS faculty and staff. We're here to encourage you--to offer the guidance, success strategies, and tools that you'll need to "drive your own progress forward."

National High School's academic program and services center on three key principles:
personalization, accessibility and uniqueness. Each of these three principles is focused on empowering students to help themselves.

  1. Personalization: Our school prides itself on its student-centered approach to individualization. In this way, our primary focus to strengthen relationships between and among student, teacher, parent, while providing a learner-friendly curriculum and the keys to life-long learning in general. We do this by:
    • Providing an advisement program where students are assigned to a faculty member who serves as their advocate in preparing them for successful transition to their future endeavors.
    • Publishing a course description, a syllabus, pacing guides, assessment tools and student grades online so that each student has the opportunity to take individual ownership of his or her learning in a setting where communication is clear and expectations are understood.
    • Providing a guidance program that will assist students in developing a Personal Education Plan (PEP).This plan encourages each student to take control over his or her academic success.
    • Providing learning activities that are student centered and adaptable to various student needs, without time limitations.
    • Providing opportunities for academic concentration, career preparation and cultural enrichment. o The remainder here (with typo) has been moved down to point (f).
    • Involving parents/guardians in their education the education process through frequent and regular two-way contact.
  2. Accessibility: Not only does our dynamic course delivery system allow students, parents and teachers to access courses 24-7, but we also offer:
    • Opportunities for individual tutoring services by phone, online, in threaded group based instruction.
    • Opportunities to earn the credits needed for graduation without being limited by conventional classroom and school constraints.
    • Self-paced courses that provide the flexibility necessary to promote individual advancement and promotion based on the needs and strengths of each student.
  3. Uniqueness: There are other components of our program that truly set our school apart from other traditional and Online schools.
    • Our courses are instructor facilitated from a distance, allowing students and families a broader possible range of educational settings.
    • Our courses are designed to provide students opportunities to actively interact with audio, visual, and kinesthetic learning models wherever they have access to a computer and the internet.
    • We have developed standards based subject matter curriculum that is consistent, relevant, rigorous and available to all students on an as needed basis.
    • Students are able to draw from a number of online courses, as needed, to provide over 100 courses (including 15 AP courses).
    • We believe that the learning environment for a student is most successful when there is a partnership among student, parents and school. Consequently, the nature of our Online High School requires substantial parent involvement and supervision for student success.
